Fined For Not Having Safety Mark On Goods
15 May 2001
Singapore -- Serangoon Road retailer Mohamed Mustafa & Samsuddin has been fined for selling electronic goods that do not bear the safety mark issued by the Productivity and Standards Board (PSB). It was one of two department stores punished in court for the same offence last Friday.
The Syed Alwi Road retailer was fined $6,000 in the subordinate courts for selling a non-registered hi-fi system. The PSB had earlier issued the store a warning letter and fined it $2,000.
The other retailer, Fixed Price Wholesales Centre, which has a shop in Lavender Street and another at Katong Mall in East Coast Road, was fined $3,000 for selling a non-registered video CD player.
Under the Consumer Protection (Safety Requirements) Regulations, manufacturers and traders of 31 categories of household appliances are required to get these goods tested for safety and registered with the PSB before they can be sold here. These appliances can cause injury, electrocution and death, as well as spark off fires and explosions and emit radiation if they do not meet the relevant safety standards.
The maximum penalty for trading in non-registered controlled goods is a $10,000 fine and two years' jail.
