Shell's 15 Years Of Safe Operations At Lutong Refinery
8 May 2001
MIRI, Sarawak, Malaysia -- The Lutong refinery, Malaysia's first oil refinery, has achieved a record-breaking milestone in safety when its personnel and contractors clocked 15 continuous years of safe operations on March 21, 2001 and five million manhours worked without any lost time injury (LTI) on April 25, 2001.
To mark the achievement, senior manager for Lutong Refinery Khaw Teo Giap inserted a milestone into the facilities' main gate, watched by refinery and contractor personnel. The refinery is manned by 57 Shell staff and 30 contractor personnel.
Sarawak Shell Bhd said Lutong Refinery is the only refinery in the Royal Dutch/Shell Group worldwide to have achieved both a zero lost time injury frequency over 15 years and zero total recordable case frequency over the last six consecutive years.
It said continuous commitment to health, safety and the environment, and teamwork were the main drivers behind this good safety record.
Lutong began operations in 1917 and is capable of processing 35,000 barrels of crude per day, drawn mainly from the Baram oilfields offshore Miri with its two distillation units.
About 50 percent of its products are distributed to the east Malaysian market while the rest is exported to Singapore, Japan and other countries.
In 1993, Lutong Refinery was the first oil refinery in Malaysia to receive the international ISO 9002 accreditation for quality standard.
