Two More Kids Ill With Virus In Johor
JOHOR BARU, Malaysia, 22 March 2001 -- Two more cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been detected in Johor, bringing to 22 the total number of children who have contracted the virus.
The cases are confined to the district of Kulai, about 33 km from Johor Baru.
Kulai district councillor Wee Yoop Tawi said the latest victim was a one-year-old girl, who had fever and blisters in her mouth.
She said the health authorities had advised the child's parents to admit her to hospital.
The second case involved a 14-month-old boy, who was admitted on Monday and discharged on Tuesday.
The Johor health authorities refused to confirm the two new cases while Kulai Hospital director Dr Rahim Abdul Rahman said three children were now hospitalised with the illness.
'Their condition is stable but I cannot confirm whether the patients are from the same village,' he said.
He advised parents to send their children to government hospitals or clinics immediately if they showed symptoms of the virus.
Kulai was jolted by news that 20 children from a village of 500 had contracted the virus within 10 days.
