Pollution: Move To Stop Dust From Mine

KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia, 7 March 2001 -- Efforts are being made to reduce dust pollution from the Mamut Copper Mine's (MCM) copper waste dumping site known as the Lohan dam, about 120km from here by greening the area.

A total of 40,000 saplings had been planted at the crest of the Lohan dam to reduce the dust pollution which had for many years affected nearby villagers.

The initiative is undertaken by Mega First Corporation Bhd, the parent company of the now defunct MCM.

Mega First group managing director Y.N. Chin said it cost the company almost RM1 million over the past six months to green the area. "The dust problem at Lohan dam will soon be a thing of the past. Work could not be carried out earlier when the mine was shot down in October 1999 because time was needed for the surface of the dam to harden," he said in a statement.

He said the ground would be kept wet by using water sprinklers and water tankers. "A total of 75 sprinklers have been installed around the perimeter of the dam."

He added that the surface of the dam was being divided into compartments and would later be flooded.
