Power Lines Can Increase Risk Of Cancer, Says Report
LONDON, 4 March 2001 -- A leading British scientist is preparing to submit an official report which will claim high voltage electricity cables can increase the risk of childhood cancer, a newspaper reported today.
The claim, in The Sunday Times, will be worrying for thousands of people who live in the vicinity of electricity pylons dotted about Britain.
According to the newspaper, the discovery was made as a result of research led by Sir Richard Doll, the scientist who discovered the link between smoking and lung cancer in the 1960s.
The work was commissioned by the National Radiological Protection Board, the government's radiation watchdog. Professor Colin Blakemore, a member of the research group, was quoted in the newspaper as saying: "The evidence is that there is a slightly elevated risk of cancer near to power lines."
Doll refused to comment on the Sunday Times report, saying he would not speak until a press conference on his findings which is scheduled for Tuesday.
