NIOSH and AboutSafety dotCom Organises Largest-ever Safety Industry Expo
KUALA LUMPUR, August 7, 2001 - For the first time in Malaysia, AboutSafety dotCom Sdn Bhd have been appointed as the exhibition management and organised the largest ever exhibition on occupational safety and health (OSH) in conjunction with the 4th NIOSH National Conference on Occupational Safety and Health being held here from Aug 7-8, 2001.
The conference and exhibition are significant events given the numerous OSH issues faced by over 80,000 small and medium industries (SMIs) in Malaysia, especially with their immense contribution to the economy.
AboutSafety dotCom manages the occupational safety and health portal called www.aboutsafety.com, a platform for the safety industry comprising global manufacturers, distributors, dealers and consultants to publish news and articles as well as to enable education, training and e-business.
AboutSafety dotCom general manager KK Chen said the OSH exhibition aims to increase awareness of industries and the public on the importance of safety and health, and to expose industries to the different aspects of OSH and the environment and how to enhance workplace safety.
It will also enable OSH practitioners to discover the latest local and regional products and services specific to the OSH needs of their organisations.
"This exhibition will assist the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in establishing relations and cooperation with OSH practitioners in Malaysia and the neighbouring countries as well as in promoting NIOSH as a centre of excellence for OSH services in the region," Chen added.
Exhibitors at the 52 booths set up at the MINES Malaysia International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, comprise OSH consultants, environmental consultants, OSH equipment manufacturers and distributors, fire and rescue apparatus manufacturers and distributors, and those involved in storage and waste removal.
The participants are from the petrochemical, hotel, manufacturing, hospital and health services, aviation and maritime industries, the police force as well as the fire and rescue department.
"This is the first time that the OSH exhibition is open to the public and industries unlike in the past where it was limited to conference participants. Schools and institutions of higher learning are also welcome. Admission is free," Chen noted.
In addition, AboutSafety dotCom is inviting management and safety officers of companies to organise field trips for their workers to attend the exhibition.
The 4th National Conference on Occupational Safety and Health is organised by NIOSH. The conference's theme is OSH for the SMIs - solutions, implementation and productivity.
The theme is chosen in view of the OSH issues faced by the SMIs due to the increased complexities that accompany the developments and changes in technologies. Therefore, the SMIs need to rediscover themselves to ensure survival.
The two-day event will also see the launch of the NIOSH R&D Grant and the Occupational Health Nursing Guidelines.
